Hey guys/gals! So, I've been playing guitar for about a year now. I basically play/practice on my own. No bandmates or friends nearby to jam with or learn from. I can play a couple of songs the whole way through and large chunks of a couple dozen or so other songs. My chord changes are becoming quicker and have even started singing along with a couple (slower paced) songs. Now, I am trying to get the "right" sound/tone for the songs I want to play. I understand there are many variables. From type of guitar (2004 Epiphone Casino) to amp (Fender Champion 20) to strings used, room dynamics, individual playing style etc. But are there any references out there to tell you (even roughly) on how to get the right tone (or closest to the original tone) for the song you want to play? Also, I don't yet have any pedals, I am only using the built-in tones/effects of the amp. TIA.
Can we get an answer to the question of who plays the third guitar that doubles the bass line during the chorus of While My Guitar Gently Weeps?
Some people say that it must be John playing octaves on his Epiphone Casino because he is credited to playing guitar on the song. Others swear that the warm tone and the perfectly synced octaves could realistically only have been produced by George's Rickenbacker 12 string. While there is no official record of George playing his Rickenbacker after 1966, it seems highly unlikely that John would have been willing to contribute so much to one of George's songs, especially after John had already played organ on the backing track and is also believed to have used his Fender 6 string bass to double the verse sections of Paul's bassline to create a thicker bass sound. I haven't been able to find any concrete answers as to who plays this guitar part, so I figured I might as well try asking here. Edit: I mean bridge not chorus
I’m looking for a semi hollow or hollow body electric. Ideally less than €1.5k, ideally again cheap before sacrificing too much in terms of quality. I’m thinking Epiphone Casino or Sheraton, beyond that I’m stumped. Maybe an Eastman? What do you suggest? I’m after the Hold back the river tone by James Bay.
One of the guitarists I play with, let's call him Muffin, thinks you can simply EQ my basses to sound the same. For whatever asinine reason(maybe it's pride), he has decided to die on the hill that he can make my Rickenbacker 4003 sound just like my Warwick Thumb, and could make them sound like a Pbass if he wanted to. He also completely discredits that they have a voice of their own, or that different strings change the tone. He thinks he can EQ that as well. It makes me fucking crazy, but for the sake of the music we make, I just sort of nod my head at this point. Understanding EQ is important. I've played for a long time, in lots of different bands, in lots of different scenarios and you need to know how to match a room on the fly. HOWEVER. Telling me that you don't think there are tonal differences between, say, a EBMM Stingray and a Hofner Beatle bass and that "eh, a bass is a bass. The pickups are all the same shit" is wildly uninformed and blind to my experience as a bassist. I don't pretend to know the discrepancies in guitar tones, but I do know there's a reason you never saw someone like Dime up there shredding an Epiphone Casino between bottles of Jack Daniels. I forgot what falling in love with a guitar felt like. (Long post) [Discussion]
I’m an aspiring, amateur songwriter and released an acoustic Folk album a few years back. Recently, I made some GarageBand demos of my latest crop of songs, but I felt they just didn’t translate to the acoustic and a friend suggested I try playing the songs with an electric instead. I didn’t think it would make much difference; playing guitar is playing guitar, right? No. No it is not. After getting past the initial intimidation and unfamiliarity I had with the feel and tone of different electrics—plus my discomfort and frustration figuring out pedals, apps, amps, and sims—I understand now that an acoustic guitar and an electric guitar may as well be from different planets. I’m fortunate enough to know a few good gear junkies who let me borrow guitars they weren’t using so I could decide which type I’d want to buy for myself. Ran through a couple Strats, an Epiphone Les Paul, SG, and Casino, a Deluxe Tele, Standard Tele, and a Schecter hollow-body. While each had something I liked, none of them quite satisfied me. I happened by a guitar store one day to do some more searching when I found what I’m fairly certain will be THE guitar for me for the rest of my life. The Squire Jazz Master. (J Mascis variety, to be exact). I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but for me they’re the tea, the leaf, the pot, the kettle, the boil, the brew, the pitcher, the jug...and whatever else you can associate with tea. I can’t put it into words, but holding it, playing it—even when I hit a wrong note—just FEELS SO DAMN AWESOME AND FUN AND COOL. I LOVE everything about this guitar, Shout out to Mr. Mascis for backing/designing such a wonderful instrument at a RIDICULOUSLY affordable price. It has brought me back to a love of not just playing and writing, but learning and practicing. Playing acoustic, I used to grind through my practice and warm-ups, desperately waiting for the timer to ring. But with this Jazz Master, I go through my paces with a giant, dorky grin plastered on my face the entire time. Then I let that dark, warm tone cradle and carry my creativity away into a gently eerie, dissonant, wobbly, soothing, sonic heaven.
So I, being a poor UK student, decided to buy my first serious guitar online. Long story short, I’ve got a gorgeous looking Epiphone Casino looking guitar, called an Oscar Schmidt. But it’s got quite a few problems with it. The strings are at different heights due to the nut not being level, and the guitar neck is dead straight even with the truss rod tightened as much as it safely can be (not too knowledgeable on the technical side of things so I probs got some of the terminology wrong). Anyways, the two techs that looked at it basically valued the fix to be just under what I was supposed to have paid for it, so I considered sending it back for a refund, but to do that I’d have to pay the £90 shipping back to the US. I already got boned by postage and import tax so what was supposed to be a £220 guitar ended up being upwards of £350, which I could’ve just bought an actual Epiphone with. However it looks unique and really pretty (Edit: and it sounds really nice, decent bluesy tone) so I’m loathe to get rid of it, I was thinking just replacing the neck, any suggestions?
[QUESTION] What guitar sounds bright like a strat but has no twang?
Hey guys, you have no clue how much I appreciate your help on this. I bought a reissue 50's strat and it's so bright- which I like. But it's got a LOT of twang. Do you know of any guitar that sounds bright like the strat I have, but does not have any twang? I've tried an epiphone dot, epiphone casino, but they're just not bright enough for me. Post note: if I cut the tone knob down to three on my strat it sounds great but you can tell the sustain of the notes are cut down because the knob pick up is set at a low level.
[QUESTION] What is a good sounding, reasonably priced Hollow/Semi-Hollow body guitar to get?
Hello. I am looking to purchase my first hollow/semi-hollow body guitar but I'm not sure which one I should get, or if I should get one at all. The main reason I want one is so I can get some really nice blues rock sounds (much like the black keys) and to have a different take on my overall sound. I currently have a Fender MIM Strat and a Fender MIM Tele running into a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. One guitar that caught my eyes (and my ears) was the New 2016 Gibson Memphis ES-Les Paul... but that's way to expensive for me. I'm looking to get something off of kijiji (Canadian craigslist) so hopefully something not too expensive and popular so there is a lot of them on the market. I just have no idea where to start looking or what to really look for. Somethings I would like for the guitar is for it to be relatively small in comparison to other hollow body's and I think I want humbuckersor maybe p90's so I can change up my tone a bit but I still need it to have a good clean sound. Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks.
So I've been working with a little Fender solid-state for a while now and I'm looking to move up into real tube territory. I play Psych-Garage music (heavy distortion, cleanish-reverby tones, fuzz, generous use of effects) and I've tried out a few amps. I was sitting in Center of Guitars last night with an Epiphone Casino and tried out a used Blackstar Artist 30. The gain on it wasn't super crazy, but it distorted in a very natural and pleasing way. I was comparing it to a couple of different used Fender tube amps they had (Hot Rod Deluxe, and some kind of 40w tweed). Maybe it was my imagination, but the Blackstar seemed... richer? Fuller? I'm curious about this because most of my favorite artists use Fender amps (Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, The White Stripes, Saint Vincent, Syd Barrett). What am I missing? I know the Blackstar is a little more limited in terms of clean tones, and traditionally Fender amps are seen as the better pedal-platforms. Would the Fender fit nicer in a full band mix? The distortion on the Fenders (at least the tones I dialed in) sounded harsher, nastier. People say Fender amps are more versatile, would I be limiting myself too much if I went with the Blackstar? Edit: A lot of people are mentioning Traynor amps. How do they compare to Fenders?
Hey guys, I've been playing for a while and had been looking to buy a new guitar soon. I have a few question regarding the choices I have. Right now, I'm looking between 3 guitars: an Epiphone Wildkat Royale, Epiphone Korina Explorer, and an Epiphone Casino Coupe. I do not have the ability to play any of these because I don't live near any big music stores.
For the Wildkat Royale, is it about the same size as an Epi Les Paul?
Can I take the metal plague off of the Wildkat headstock?
How does the Bigsby sound? What variety can I get out of it?
Can I replace one of the P90 pickups with a double coil P90? How would that affect the sound?
For the Explorer, what is your opinion on using it for genres other than metal? I know you can use any guitar for any genre, but would it fit look-wise?
If I got the Explorer, I'd probably swap out one of the pickups for a Gibson P-94 or a similar humbucker sized P90 pickup. I assume there shouldn't be much hassle in that?
For the Casino Coupe, is it an archtop? I couldn't find the answer anywhere, but from the images it looks like a flat top.
Can I take the pickguard off the Casino Coupe?
Which guitar would you recommend the most? I plan on playing mainly rock.

[DISCUSSION] What does your collection and/or wishlist look like? What should every guitarist have in their collection/wishlist?
I don't know if I'll ever be able to tick all of these off, but right now my wishlist is basically broken down into two parts; realistic, short-medium term guitar goals and a whole bunch of "in-the-event-of-financial-windfalls" dream/"fuck it let's go crazy" purchases. I'm not too interested in collecting a bunch of Strats just because they're really vintage; I want just about every guitar I buy in my life to serve its own unique purpose and have its own personality. But first, my collection;
Cort M600, sunburst, currently tuned to C standard. Pretty good for Kyuss, QOTSA and stoner rock in general (it even looks similar to Josh Homme's iconic Ovation Ultra GP). Not sure how it'd go for standard tuning songs cos I downtuned it the instant I got it and never tuned it back up. Haven't properly played it in several months due to both my main amp and a backup practice amp carking it (I plan on getting a Boss Katana 50 to go with the Squier Strat).
Yamaha F130. Needs to be restrung, but I'm too poor to buy strings and every time I try to restring it by following a guide I end up breaking the replacements so it sits unused in my room.
Yamaha C40. Currently my main guitar while my other two are out of action. Solid classical guitar, can't say much else about it.

The bass track of WMGGW is way more complicated than it seems
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6Mbo1A7qis In the spirit of the White Album remaster, I stumbled upon an isolated While My Guitar Gently Weeps bass track from Rock Band on youtube. I expected to hear Paul's usual brilliance chugging away on his Fender Jazz Bass, but to my surprise, there are clearly two different bass guitars being played at the same time: one with a deeper, fuller tone (likely Paul on his Fender Jazz) and one with a punchier, thinner tone (probably George on the Fender Bass VI). Then to my even greater surprise, there is an electric 12-string being played during the bridges. It's a bit buried in the original recording and I assumed it was Paul double tracking his bass line an octave higher on his Epiphone Casino (this was a technique he was experimenting with at the time), but the isolated track shows that it is quite clearly a 12-string, most likely George playing one of his Rickenbackers. Until now, I had assumed George had retired his Rickenbacker 12-strings after If I Needed Someone, so it was pretty mind-blowing to discover that he had used them on The White Album as well. Lots of stuff going on in this song! Looks like George was creating "walls of sound" before he worked with Phil Spector.

The "upgrades" were the following: -Replaced stock Pickups with GFS Dream 180 set, also added Push-Pull pots for single coil tones, I find myself using the center position all the time in single coil mode. -Replaced Epiphone pickguard with a Gibson one and glued the "E" in it. -Replaced pickup rings with cream ones. -Replaced "Dot" truss rod with an Epiphone Casino's Truss Rod (Epiphone logo) . -Replaced plastic nut with a real cow bone nut. -Added ES-355 Sticker fret inlays (have been on since 2016 and are still looking new). -Hand painted the F-Holes myself to give it a nice F-Hole binding. -Replaced pickup selector tip with a cream one. -Replaced knobs with gold reflector knobs. -Took it to the best luthier in town and gave it a nice set up with a set of D' addario 13s. I now have completed my dream project and have a beast of a guitar for a student's budget :)
